300 Blackout: The Ultimate Guide for Hunting and Home Defense

The .300 AAC Blackout (300 BLK) has become one of the most popular rifle cartridges of the past decade, and for good reason. Developed specifically for the AR-15 platform, 300 Blackout delivers rifle-caliber power in a compact package that excels in two critical roles: hunting and home defense.

Whether you’re chasing hogs through the Texas brush or setting up a reliable home defense rifle, 300 Blackout deserves serious consideration. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the cartridge, its capabilities, and how to set up the perfect 300 BLK rifle for your needs.

What is 300 Blackout?

The .300 AAC Blackout was developed by Advanced Armament Corporation (AAC) and Remington Defense in 2010. The goal was simple: create a cartridge that delivers 7.62x39mm ballistics (think AK-47) from a standard AR-15 platform without sacrificing magazine capacity or requiring major modifications.

The result is a .30 caliber round that uses the same bolt, magazines, and lower receiver as a standard 5.56 NATO AR-15. The only change required is a new barrel. This makes converting an existing rifle to 300 Blackout straightforward and affordable.

Key Specifications

  • Caliber: .308 (7.62mm)
  • Parent Case: .223 Remington (trimmed and necked up)
  • Bullet Weight: 110-220 grains
  • Muzzle Velocity: 1,000-2,400 fps (depending on load)
  • Thread Pitch: 5/8″-24
  • Optimal Barrel Length: 9-10.5 inches

Supersonic vs Subsonic: Two Cartridges in One

One of 300 Blackout’s biggest advantages is its versatility. The cartridge is designed to perform with two distinct load types:

Supersonic Loads (110-125 grain)

Supersonic 300 BLK pushes lighter bullets at 2,200-2,400 fps. These loads deliver terminal performance similar to 7.62x39mm, making them excellent for:

  • Hunting medium game (hogs, deer, coyotes)
  • Home defense where barrier penetration may be needed
  • General range use and training

At 100-200 yards, supersonic 300 Blackout is a capable hunting round with energy levels exceeding 1,000 ft-lbs at the muzzle.

Subsonic Loads (190-220 grain)

Subsonic loads use heavy bullets traveling below 1,050 fps (the speed of sound). When paired with a suppressor, these loads are remarkably quiet—often compared to a heavy airgun. Subsonic 300 BLK is ideal for:

  • Suppressed shooting with minimal noise
  • Close-range hunting where sound reduction matters
  • Home defense with reduced concussion and flash
  • Night hunting with thermal or night vision optics

The tradeoff is reduced velocity and energy. Subsonic loads are best kept within 100 yards for hunting applications.

300 Blackout for Hunting

The 300 BLK has proven itself as a legitimate hunting cartridge, particularly for medium-sized game at moderate ranges.

Texas Hog Hunting

For hog hunting, 300 Blackout is hard to beat. Feral hogs are tough, often require follow-up shots, and are frequently hunted at night. The 300 BLK checks every box:

  • Stopping power: .30 caliber bullets hit harder than .223/5.56
  • Suppressor-friendly: Reduces noise for night hunts without spooking other hogs
  • Compact platform: Lightweight AR pistols or SBRs are easy to maneuver from blinds or helicopters
  • Magazine capacity: Standard 30-round magazines mean you’re ready for groups of hogs

For hog hunting, we recommend supersonic 110-125 grain loads for clean, ethical kills out to 150 yards. If you’re hunting suppressed at night and shots will be close, subsonic loads work well inside 75 yards.

Deer Hunting

300 Blackout is legal for deer hunting in most states (check your local regulations). For whitetail and similar-sized game, stick with supersonic expanding bullets in the 110-130 grain range. Keep shots within 150 yards for best results, and aim for clean shot placement behind the shoulder.

Predator and Varmint Hunting

For coyotes and predators, 300 BLK offers more knockdown power than .223 with the same platform. Subsonic loads are excellent for calling in coyotes without the blast alerting every animal in the county.

300 Blackout for Home Defense

The 300 Blackout was designed with close-quarters applications in mind, making it a strong choice for home defense.

Why Choose 300 BLK for Home Defense?

  • Terminal performance: .30 caliber bullets create larger wound channels than 5.56
  • Short barrel efficiency: 300 BLK performs optimally from 9-10.5″ barrels, making compact AR pistols viable
  • Suppressor compatibility: A suppressed 300 BLK reduces blast, flash, and hearing damage in enclosed spaces
  • Reliable feeding: The cartridge was designed to feed reliably in AR-15 platforms

Supersonic or Subsonic for Home Defense?

This is a common question with no single right answer:

Supersonic offers more energy and better terminal performance through barriers. If you’re not running a suppressor, supersonic is the practical choice.

Subsonic with a suppressor significantly reduces muzzle blast and hearing damage—a real consideration in an enclosed hallway at 2 AM. However, subsonic loads have less energy, so bullet selection becomes critical. Look for purpose-built subsonic defensive loads designed to expand at lower velocities.

Overpenetration Concerns

All rifle cartridges—including 300 Blackout—will penetrate interior walls. This is true of .223, 300 BLK, and even pistol calibers. Responsible home defense means knowing your target and what’s beyond it. Quality defensive ammunition designed to expand can reduce overpenetration, but no rifle round is “safe” through drywall.

Choosing the Right Barrel Length

Unlike .223/5.56, which benefits from longer barrels, 300 Blackout was designed to perform from short barrels. Here’s how barrel length affects performance:

10.5″ Barrel (Optimal)

The 10.5″ barrel is considered the sweet spot for 300 Blackout. At this length, supersonic loads achieve complete powder burn and maximum velocity. Shorter doesn’t gain you much; longer adds weight without meaningful ballistic improvement.

16″ Barrel

A 16″ barrel is required to avoid NFA restrictions (unless you’re building a pistol or registered SBR). You’ll gain a small amount of velocity over a 10.5″ barrel, and the longer sight radius can aid accuracy. For a dedicated hunting rifle that won’t be suppressed, 16″ is a solid choice.

AR Pistol vs SBR

If you want the compact advantage of a short barrel, you have two options:

  • AR Pistol: Equipped with a stabilizing brace instead of a stock. No NFA paperwork required.
  • Short Barreled Rifle (SBR): Requires ATF Form 4 approval and $200 tax stamp. Allows use of a traditional rifle stock.

Both are excellent options for 300 Blackout. The G2 Precision AR Pistol in 300 Blackout features a 10.5″ barrel optimized for the cartridge.

Suppressor Considerations

300 Blackout and suppressors are a natural pairing. The cartridge was literally designed with suppressed use in mind.

When shopping for a 300 BLK suppressor, look for:

  • Full-auto rated: Handles sustained fire and higher round counts
  • .30 caliber bore: Maximizes suppression for .30 cal projectiles
  • Quick-detach mount: Allows easy attachment and removal

G2 Precision rifles in 300 Blackout come with 5/8″-24 threading, the industry standard for .30 caliber suppressors. Our rifles are compatible with the G2 Precision/Crux Suppressors flash hider, which serves as both a flash suppressor and a quick-attach mount for Crux suppressors.

Important Safety Warning

Never load 300 Blackout ammunition into a rifle chambered in .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO.

A 300 BLK round will chamber in a .223/5.56 rifle, but firing it will cause a catastrophic failure. The larger .30 caliber bullet cannot fit through the .224 caliber bore, resulting in a destroyed rifle and potentially serious injury.

If you own firearms in both calibers, keep ammunition clearly separated and labeled. Many shooters use different colored magazines for 300 BLK to prevent dangerous mix-ups.
